For some, tango is a piece of compassed, sad music, bordering on depression.

This impression is often caused by a lack of knowledge of this culture, or at least by considering too small a part of the repertoire.

By quickly looking through my collection, I identify about 200 titles clearly to classify as humorous, even bordering on farce.

Of course, humour is not universal and what made Argentines laugh in the ’40s is probably not what makes a European laugh today.

First, when you’re a DJ, one of the goals is for people to have fun. I know that my work is successful when people smile or even laugh.

Many milongas are hilarious to dance, but some waltzes and tangos do not lack humour. Even this dear Pugliese made some funny recordings.

The DJ plays with feelings to alternate cheerful tandas and other more romantic or even sad ones, but in moderation, the dancers are there to have fun, not to cut the veins.

This is also a big difference between the milongas of Europe and those of Buenos Aires. In the first, we take ourselves seriously, in the second, we come to have a good time. It is perhaps this kind of attitude that encourages some European DJs to adopt repertoires that are not very euphoric.

With more than 20 years of experience in the field, I can testify that even in the most serious encuentros, humour has its place and that finally, dancers appreciate entertaining music, even if their proportion is probably lower in this type of event.

Life is too short to ruin it by being sad, the milonga is a party, and forgetting that tango is above all a popular entertainment is, in my opinion, a mistake.

I think I’m going to do an article on the subject for my blog because it saddens me to see dancers bored with depressed DJs. The latter think they are doing well, but in this way, they serve the tango’s soul, which is a shame.

Between the vulgarity of a Rodriguez, the nostalgic joy of a Firpo, the euphoriant energy of D’Arienzo, or the eclecticism of Canaro there is plenty to do.

Let’s laugh at the tango!
